On Reciprocal Peer Review in Small Writing Communities

¹DocuPeer Working Papers

Abstract

We describe a peer-review model in which every reviewer is also a writer, and every writer must earn feedback by giving it. In a three-month pilot with n = 184 papers and n′ = 412 reviews we show that reciprocity produces feedback that authors rate 0.7 points higher on a five-point scale than feedback from non-writing reviewers.

1Introduction

The exchange of thoughtful, subject-matter feedback has long been treated as a scarce resource, controlled by the boundaries of institutions and the availability of senior reviewers. In this paper we describe a reciprocal model in which every reviewer is also a writer, and every writer must earn feedback by giving it.

We argue that the resulting community is not merely fairer but produces substantively better commentary. Prior work in scholarly communication [1, 3, 7] has largely assumed a fixed pool of expert reviewers; our contribution is to relax that assumption.

The remainder of this paper is organised as follows. Section 2 describes the matching function used to pair a submission with two independent reviewers. Section 3 describes the anonymity model. Section 4 reports empirical results from the three-month pilot, which we will discuss at length below.

What is DocuPeer?

DocuPeer is an online peer review platform for research papers, essays, thesis chapters, lab reports, and other serious writing. Instead of paying for feedback, users earn it by reviewing other papers first. That keeps the platform free, active, and centered on useful written critique.

Every paper is shown anonymously to reviewers. Every review is matched by subject area and level when possible. The result is a better way to get feedback before a class submission, research deadline, application, or publication step.

Why writers use it

  • Free peer review with no subscriptions or paid tiers.
  • Anonymous feedback that reduces bias and keeps the focus on the writing.
  • Reviewer matching by specialty and education level for better quality feedback.
  • Inline highlights, comments, and suggestions that make revision easier.
